Final Considerations: How to Measure and Install Your Spa Pool Cover for Maximum Benefits

Accurate Measurement Techniques

Getting the measurements right is essential to ensure your spa pool cover fits snugly and performs optimally. Start by measuring the spa's length, width, and depth. Use a tape measure, making sure it is long enough to reach all corners comfortably. When measuring length and width, take readings at multiple points — several inches in from the edges — to account for any irregularities or measurement errors. Record the smallest measurement, as the cover must fit securely over the base of the spa.

For depth, measure from the bottom of the spa shell to the top edge, especially if your spa has a rounded or uneven shell. This depth measurement influences the height of the cover and whether any additional measures, such as cushioning or sealing strips, might be needed.

When measuring for the cover’s perimeter, add extra centimetres for clearance. This space allows for easy removal and replacement, particularly if the spa has an irregular shape or integrated steps. A standard recommendation is to add about 2-4 centimetres to your measurements to guarantee ease of fit and removal.

If your spa has steps or a built-in ledge, it’s best to include these features in your measurements. Take separate measurements for these areas to ensure the cover accommodates not just the top of the spa but provides proper sealing and protection across all zones.

Choosing the Right Cover Size

A well-fitting cover offers numerous benefits, including better insulation, more effective debris prevention, and an overall professional appearance. When selecting or custom-ordering your cover, double-check the measurements taken. Many manufacturers provide size guides — measure twice and confirm with their specifications before confirming your order.

It's advisable to opt for a slightly larger measure rather than a snug fit. A careful balance works best — too large and the cover may shift or allow debris in, too tight and it could be difficult to install or remove. Adjustable straps or securing clips can help compensate for slight variations, ensuring the cover remains secure.

Remember to consider the shape and design of your spa. An odd-shaped or unusual spa requires a custom cover to avoid gaps. If your spa has features like cut-outs or specific protrusions, these should be factored into your measurements or discussed with your cover supplier.

Proper Installation Techniques

Once your cover arrives, correct installation is vital to maximise its lifespan and performance. Firstly, clear the spa surface of dirt or debris to prevent scratching or damage to the underside of the cover. It’s often recommended to place a protective, non-slip mat or padding beneath the cover during installation to minimise movement and protect the spa surface.

Position the cover over the spa carefully, ensuring it sits evenly on all sides. When fitting, lift the cover from the centre rather than dragging it across the surface, reducing the risk of ripping or tearing. If your cover has straps or clips, attach these as directed, tightening them gradually and evenly on all sides to ensure a secure fit without overstressing the material.

For covers with specialised locking mechanisms or tension straps, check these are engaging correctly and evenly to prevent gaps that could compromise insulation or allow debris entry. Regularly inspect the tightness of these fastenings, especially after periods of hot or humid weather, when materials may expand or contract.

In cases where your spa has a unique or complex shape, consider using custom-fit covers with reinforced edges and tailored fasteners. These features help maintain a tight seal, which is vital for both energy efficiency and cleanliness. After installation, check all edges to ensure there are no gaps or loose areas.

Maintenance and Re-Assessment

Over time, spa covers can shift or become less effective due to weather, wear, or alterations to your spa. It’s a good idea to periodically re-measure your spa to confirm the cover still fits well. This is especially important if your spa has been moved, altered, or if you notice drafts, debris, or water ingress under the cover.

During routine inspections, look for signs of wear such as cracks, tears, or mould. If the cover has become damaged or no longer fits properly, it will need replacing or re-sealing. Proper maintenance, including cleaning the cover with gentle soap and water, can prolong its lifespan and effectiveness.

Lastly, ensure all securing straps and fastenings are in good order. Tighten or replace them as needed. A well-maintained cover that fits properly will not only extend its longevity but will also preserve the energy efficiency and cleanliness of your spa pool.

Regularly following these guidance points on measurement and installation ensures your spa cover provides maximum protection, insulation, and convenience, leading to a better spa experience overall.

Awesome company, awesome people, awesome product!

We didn't even buy our Trueform pool new from them or reseller, but a mint condition refurbished 'Eco' model from The Spa Guy in Rotorua.

But we still had some questions regarding setup, water treatment etc, and Bridget/Gwen were absolutely amazing with help and advice via multiple calls/emails even though I didn't purchase the pool new.

Highly recommend them and the product they sell, our pool is just the basic entry level pool, but the construction/quality/insulation is the same as the top of their line pools.

If we grow out of this one, or ever want an upgraded pool with more features, we will definitely go Trueform again.
