The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Spa Pool

The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Spa Pool

Buying a spa pool is an exciting investment, but many first-time buyers make costly mistakes that lead to higher running costs, poor performance, or regret. With so many options on the market, it’s easy to be swayed by price, flashy features, or misleading marketing. However, choosing the wrong spa can result in high energy bills, frequent maintenance issues, and an overall disappointing experience.

To ensure you get a high-quality, long-lasting spa pool, it’s important to avoid these common mistakes.

Choosing Based on Price Alone

One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is shopping only based on price. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, a lower upfront cost often means poor insulation, low-quality materials, and inefficient components, which can lead to higher running costs and costly repairs over time.

  • Cheap spa pools often use thin plastic shells that crack or fade quickly, whereas NZ-made spa pools typically feature reinforced acrylic shells with fibreglass backing for durability.

  • Low-end models may have weak, inefficient pumps and heaters, causing higher electricity bills because they need to run longer to maintain the water temperature.

  • Many budget brands lack proper insulation, meaning heat escapes easily, making them expensive to operate, especially in New Zealand’s cooler months.

A well-insulated, factory-direct spa from a trusted manufacturer may cost more upfront, but it saves money in the long run by reducing power bills and maintenance costs.

Ignoring Insulation and Energy Efficiency

Many buyers overlook insulation quality when choosing a spa pool, but this is one of the most important factors for long-term cost savings. A poorly insulated spa loses heat quickly, forcing the heater to work harder and increasing electricity costs.

  • Full-foam insulation around the shell and plumbing retains heat effectively and reduces energy waste.

  • A high-quality spa pool cover prevents heat loss when the spa isn’t in use.

  • Base insulation stops cold air from seeping in, which is essential for maintaining a stable temperature.

NZ-made spa pools are designed for local conditions, ensuring they perform well year-round without excessive energy consumption. Buying a spa without proper insulation could mean spending hundreds of dollars more per year on power bills.

Getting the Wrong Size for Your Needs

Many first-time buyers underestimate how much space they need or buy a spa that doesn’t suit their lifestyle. A spa that’s too small may feel cramped, while one that’s too large increases running costs unnecessarily.

  • Think about how many people will regularly use the spa. A two-person spa might be perfect for couples but impractical for families or those who entertain guests.

  • Larger spas require more water, chemicals, and electricity to run, so buying bigger than needed can add unnecessary costs.

  • Consider the available space at home. A spa that’s too large for your outdoor area can make installation difficult and reduce accessibility.

A well-planned purchase ensures you get the right balance of comfort, efficiency, and affordability.

Overlooking Warranty and After-Sales Support

A spa pool is a long-term investment, and after-sales support matters just as much as the product itself. Some imported spa pools come with short warranties or limited service options, leaving buyers struggling when they need repairs or replacement parts.

  • Look for a strong warranty on the shell, pumps, and heater. Trueform’s spa pools, for example, come with a five-year shell warranty and a two-year warranty on key components, ensuring peace of mind.

  • Check that replacement parts are easy to source. Some overseas brands use non-standard components, making repairs difficult and expensive.

  • NZ-made spa pools ensure better access to local servicing and parts, so you’re not left with long wait times if something needs fixing.

A lack of warranty support could mean expensive out-of-pocket costs down the track.

Ignoring Warranty and After-Sales Support

Many buyers overlook the importance of a solid warranty when purchasing a spa pool. A warranty is not just a selling point—it’s an indication of the manufacturer’s confidence in their product.

  • A short or vague warranty can signal lower-quality components that may fail early.

  • Some imported brands may not have local servicing options, leaving owners with expensive repair costs.

  • A reputable manufacturer should offer clear warranty terms on the shell, pumps, and heaters.

A high-quality NZ-made spa pool, like those from Trueform, comes with a strong warranty and accessible after-sales support, ensuring that buyers can get replacement parts and servicing when needed.

Underestimating Maintenance Requirements

Some buyers assume that all spa pools require the same level of maintenance, but this is not the case. Cheaper spa pools with weak filtration systems or poorly designed plumbing can require frequent water changes, more chemicals, and additional upkeep.

  • A quality filtration system reduces the need for excessive chemical use and frequent water changes.

  • Self-cleaning or ozone/UV sanitation systems can keep water clearer for longer, making maintenance easier.

  • Poor-quality spa covers allow debris in, increasing the need for cleaning.

Choosing a spa with an efficient filtration and sanitation system will save time and money on maintenance in the long run.

Not Considering Long-Term Durability

A spa pool should be built to last, but many buyers choose models made with thin shells, weak frames, and lower-quality plumbing that degrade quickly.

  • Acrylic shells with fibreglass backing are far more durable than roto-moulded plastic alternatives.

  • Well-constructed frames prevent warping, especially in outdoor conditions.

  • High-quality stainless steel or reinforced plastic jets last longer than cheaper plastic alternatives.

Opting for a high-quality, NZ-made spa pool ensures that it will remain in top condition for years, even in harsh weather conditions.

Buying from an Unknown or Unreliable Manufacturer

With so many spa pool brands on the market, it’s essential to buy from a manufacturer with a strong reputation. Some buyers purchase spa pools from lesser-known brands or overseas suppliers without checking reviews, only to discover issues with durability, servicing, or lack of replacement parts later on.

  • A reputable manufacturer will have proven experience, positive customer feedback, and a strong warranty.

  • NZ-made spa pools are designed for local conditions, meaning better performance and support.

  • Buying factory-direct from a trusted manufacturer ensures better value, warranty coverage, and after-sales service.

Buying a spa pool is a major decision, and avoiding common mistakes will ensure you get the best value, long-term reliability, and low running costs. By prioritising quality over price, choosing a well-insulated and durable model, checking warranty coverage, and selecting a trusted NZ manufacturer, buyers can invest in a spa pool that will last for years without unexpected expenses.

A well-made spa pool provides relaxation, health benefits, and home value, but only if chosen wisely. Taking the time to research, compare options, and consider long-term costs will result in a purchase that delivers enjoyment for many years.

Tom Kelly

Awesome company, awesome people, awesome product!

We didn't even buy our Trueform pool new from them or reseller, but a mint condition refurbished 'Eco' model from The Spa Guy in Rotorua.

But we still had some questions regarding setup, water treatment etc, and Bridget/Gwen were absolutely amazing with help and advice via multiple calls/emails even though I didn't purchase the pool new.

Highly recommend them and the product they sell, our pool is just the basic entry level pool, but the construction/quality/insulation is the same as the top of their line pools.

If we grow out of this one, or ever want an upgraded pool with more features, we will definitely go Trueform again.
